Our Mission



Spectrum Dictionary, a product created by Weiss Industries, aims to accelerate the acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community into mainstream culture increasing the ease of access of information about different identities to the general public.

Giuliana Weiss is your friendly neighborhood aromantic, grey-pansexual, genderfluid person (which every good neighborhood has). She enjoys reading and writing fanfiction, theatre, and attempting to break the laws of physics through partially careful and definitely very scientific experimentation.



Gender Identities


Agender

A term used to describe one who identifies as not having a gender.


Androgynous

A term used to describe a person who possess characteristics of both the male and female genders.


Bigender

A term to describe a person who identifies with both the male and female genders.


Binary

A term used to describe the belief that there are only two genders, male and female.


Cisgender

A term used to describe people whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth.


Demigender

A term used to describe a person who identifies with certain elements of one gender, varying in intensity depending on the person. Common subcategories include demigirl and demiboy.


Female

A term to describe one of the two binary sexes.


FTM

A person who has undergone the medical transition from female to male.


Gender Fluid

A term referring to a person who does not identify with any fixed gender.


Gender Flux

A term used to describe a person whose gender identity fluctuates in intensity.


Intergender

A term used to describe a person whose gender identity is in the middle of the binary genders or contains elements of both the male and female gender identities.


Intersex

A term to describe those who are born with physical sex markers that are not clearly male or female.


Male

A term to describe one of the two binary sexes.


MTF

A person who has undergone the medical transition from male to female.


Neutrois

A person who identifies as having a neutral gender unassociated with the male and female genders.


Nonbinary

Also referred to as gender queer, an umbrella term used to describe any person who does not identify as male or female.


Pangender

A term used to describe a person who identifies as all genders.


Polygender

A term used to refer to those who experience multiple gender identities at once.


Third Gender

A term used to describe a person who does not identify as male or female.


Transgender

An often misconceived umbrella term that refers to people whose gender identities do not match the sex they were assigned at birth.


Transsexual

A term used to describe a person who identifies emotionally or psychologically with the gender opposite to the sex they were assigned at birth.


Two Spirit

An umbrella term used mainly by the Native American LGBTQ+ community to describe people who identify as nonbinary.



Sexual Orientations


Allosexual

An umbrella term that describes people who experience sexual attraction to others.


Androsexual

A term that is used to describe a person who is attracted to masculinity.


Asexual

An umbrella term that describes people who do not experience sexual attraction to others.


Bisexual

A term used to describe people that are sexually attracted to members of both the male and female genders.


Demisexual

A term used to describe a person who does not experience sexual attraction to a person until they develop a strong connection to them.


Gay

Usually in reference to a man, one who is attracted to a person of the same gender.


Gynesexual

A term that is used to describe a person who is attracted to femininity.


Lesbian

Usually in reference to a woman, one who is attracted to a person of the same gender.


Pansexual

A term used to describe a person who is sexually attracted to people regardless of their gender identity.


Skoliosexual

A term used to describe a person who is sexually attracted to those of a nonbinary gender identity.


Straight

A term used to describe a person who is attracted to people of the opposite gender.



Romantic Preferences


Aromantic

A term used to describe a person who is not romantically attracted to others regardless of gender identity.


Biromantic

A term used to describe a person who is romantically attracted to both the male and female genders.


Panromantic

A term used to describe a person who is romantically attracted to others of any gender identity.


Polyamorous

A term used to describe a person who desires a relationship containing more than the traditionally accepted two members. Polyamory is often misconstrued as being unfaithful to one’s partner, however this is false as polyamorous relationships occur with the full consent of all involved parties.



Miscellaneous Terms


Cross Dressing

Usually in regards to the male and female sexes, a term used to describe the practice of wearing clothing traditionally associated with the opposite sex.


Dead Name

A term used to refer to the birth name of a transgender person after gender transition.


Gender

Traditionally only in reference to the male or female sexes, gender is a person’s sex in the context of social and cultural norms and expectations. More recently, gender has evolved into a spectrum of identities that are no longer limited by physical sex.


Gender Dysphoria

A term used to describe the psychological and emotional conflict that a nonbinary person feels in relation to differences between their physical sex and their gender identity. Gender dysphoria can be extremely distressing and cause lasting psychological damage to nonbinary and transgender people.


Gender Identity

A term used to describe a person’s identity in regards to the gender that they identify as.


Gender Non-Conforming

A term used to describe those whose behaviours and appearance do not align with societal norms regarding to their gender identity.


Grey

Used before other identities, the term grey falls under the asexual and aromantic spectrums and denotes a person who very rarely feels either sexual or romantic attraction to other people.


Misgendering

A term used to describe the use of a pronoun or word in regards to a person that does not align with the person’s gender identity.


Questioning

A term used to describe a person who is unsure of their gender identity, sexual or romantic orientations.


Romantic Preference

A term used to describe a person’s identity in regards to the gender that they are romantically attracted to.


Sex

Usually in reference to male and female, a system of categories that describe a person or animal by their reproductive organs.


Sexual Orientation

A term used to describe a person’s identity in regards to the gender that they are sexually attracted to.
